The state of Rajasthan is diagonally divided into the hilly and rugged
south-eastern region and the barren north-western great Than Desert,
which extends across the border into Pakistan. There are plenty of
historic cities, incredible fortresses awash with legends. And rare
gems of impressionistic beauty such as Udaipur. There are also a number
of centers which attracts travellers from far and wide, such as Pushkar
with its holy lake, and the desert city Jaisalmer whish resembles a
fantasy from the Thousand and One Nights.
Rajasthan is one of India’s prime tourist destinations. Nobody leaves
here with priceless memories, a bundle of souvenirs, and an address
book full of Friends.
This diverse state is the home of the Rajputs, a group of warriors
clans who controlled this part of India for 1000 years according to a
code of chivalry and honour akin to that of the medieval European
Knights. While temporary alliances and marriages of convenience were
the order of the day, pride and independence where always
paramount.
The Rajputs were therefore never able to present a united front against
a common aggressor. Indeed much of there energy was spent squabbling
among themselves and resultant weakness eventually led to their
becoming vassal states of the Mughal empire. Nevertheless the Rajputs
bravery and sense of honour were unparalleled.
Rajasthan has an extensive network of bus and train services, although
the trains are less useful in places such as the Shekhawati region.
Some rail services, particularly around Udaipur in South, still
operates on the slower meter-gauge system. The conversion of broad
gauge is taking place but is a painfully slow process.
But most of the travellers prefer to hire a car on rent and travel by
road to Rajasthan. As the road journey given them a chance to see what
every traveller call “The Real India”. In Rajasthan the cities are very
important but the road that connects two cities as important as the
cities. On these road you will see some of the most memorable and
fascinating things.
